Kids.gov

Presented to you by the United States Government this website is designed to offer a simple and safe way for children to gain access to a large number of websites all designed to provide educational and information on a variety of topics from Art to Social Studies.

The website caters for a range of ages from (5-8) K-5 to Grade 6-8 (11-14 year olds) with a simple to use drop-down navigation system that allows you to go to the topic of your choice easily.   Taking Art sites for Grade K-5 as an example you will see that each link that has been provided is complete with a fairly detailed description of what is on offer from each particular site.   Remembering that this website is produced by the  Federal Citizen Information Center your already safe in the knowledge that each of these sites has been reviewed for relevance and appropriate content to the particular age group it targets.

There are well over a thousand links to a varying range of educational, governmental and school websites and covers more topics than you’d first think.   By looking a little deeper you’ll find that everything from reading and writing to health and safety are covered here.  The majority of sites that your directed to are either owned or sponsored by the government, for example many are departments within larger websites like the Library of Congress and the Center for Disease Control.  Because of this inter-departmental system of providing you access to sites that are effectively sub organisations of the main government of the U.S your less likely to get directed to dead or irrelevant links.

Kids.org does offer access to external links but from what our review told us these links have been very carefully chosen and again provided content of absolute relevant to the subject matter its targeting.  In an ever changing Internet that’s all but impossible to keep up with ever changing content this site is a refreshing change as it has a higher level of responsibility than most other websites that provide access to Internet resources.   Because of the fact Kids.org is presented and sponsored by the U.S government you know they have a duty of care to provide you with only the very best and the safest of websites, they do this very successfully, and we should know, we looked at virtually every link to check.

This fantastic resource isn’t solely for children though, it has an entire links section for Educators as well.   Through this section there is pretty much everything an educator is likely to need when sourcing information to either find out for themselves or to assist them in preparing activity or learning for their students.  With sites specific to teachers and the teaching industry and fantastic resources brought to you by esteemed organizations such as the Smithsonian Institute you know your being guided to only the very best that will allow you to teach the very best.

Quite honestly, as a family safe directory ourselves we wish more governments of the world would take this approach and help provide what is a simple but highly resourceful website that caters for most children’s’ needs which all but eliminates the need for either the child or the parent / teacher having to browse the search engines trawling through thousands of irrelevant sites looking for a particular subject matter.

The site encourages interaction from its visitors and if you have any feedback either positive or negative that can help improve the project then you can do so via their online contact page.
