It was only fitting that as a directory that has its focus on providing safe content we reviewed a site that is trying hard to work on devising methods to filter undesirable content so that the child and family alike can ensure that they surf safely with the knowledge that they aren’t going to stumble across undesirable material that seems to litter the Internet at every turn. They’ve done this by creating what they’ve labeled Accountability Software which effectively monitors a person’s Internet use and emails a report of all websites visited for Accountability Partners to view.

What impressed us with this site and the service it provides is that its creating a community and takes a wide spectrum of internet concerns into account. The site not only concerns itself with the child safe side of the Internet but also pays attention to the much underplayed concerns of the adult who fall victim to the temptation of internet porn which we all know is far too freely available.

X-BlOCK

What a pleasure it was to review this site. Right from the get go your hit with the message that this is ‘THE’ place to hang out on the Internet if your a bored teen looking for some safe interaction with your peers. The awesome interactive design was an instant hit with us and even though we perhaps wouldn’t dance to the music that plays when entering the site it was still better than some tunes we’ve heard.

Putting that aside and onto the serious side of the review we looked at what exactly it was that made this site stand out, well for one they’ve kept it simple, by that we don’t mean they haven’t gone to town on the intro, they have, but they also made absolutely sure that what the site is about was labeled on the front of the page. ”

“Welcome to X-BLOCK, the place for students to hang out, learn about cyber safety and share their on-line experiences with others. It is your turn to DRiVE. Make the cyber world your world!”

Beauty Express

Beauty Express is a very well presented on-line store based in Glasgow, Scotland, providing beauty products for both the seasoned professional and start-up beautician in a wide variety of fields within the beauty market. This review however is concentrating on the areas of the site that its listed in the Cantufind directory, that being Nail Care.

Even though this is pretty much a full service beauty product supplier for the purpose of this review we concentrated on the Nail Care section. The category itself has to be one of the most impressive ones we’ve seen in a while, covering everything from Hand Treatments from Skintruth professional beauty systems, to the all important products such as Nail Art, Nail Equipment, and so on.

We also found the category navigation slightly disappointing as it failed to cater for the newly qualified technician who might prefer to look for products in a keyword fashion such as ‘Nail Tips’, ‘Glues and Adhesives’, ‘Acrylics’ and ‘Gel’ to name a few. More strength was given to listing by brand which of course would suit the professional doesn’t do the site any favours as many could be put off by the lack of simplicity.

Family Safe Reviewed

To compliment the sites that are lucky enough to get listed in our general directory, and to perhaps help promote some of the strong points of their website that perhaps the description, title, or keywords won’t show you we’ve decided on providing every site that gets listed with us a complimentary review of their site.

The reviews will be as brief as possible but also ensuring that we get across what we believe to be the main or unique selling points of the particular site. An example of a review can be found here. What you’ll notice from these reviews is that we provide the site with their logo, if they have one, hyperlinks to key areas of the website that may otherwise not be reached without searching, together with as many contact details as we can obtain.

Semantic Manipulation is one of the most difficult problems to overcome with internet content, more-so within the context of searching.   In the following article we hope to educate you just what this means and just how bad a problem it can be, but also why we think directories can benefit over search engines when it comes to taking control of this phenomenon so widely abused.

So what is Semantic Manipulation?

Semantic manipulation can be defined as the ‘manipulation of words’.   In simpler terms, semantics is basically the way we interpret words and ‘manipulation’ is, well, what it says it is.
The animal Kingdom can give us two instant examples of where words or terms can be semantically manipulated, look at birds as an example of semantics, a ‘cock’ is male bird, a ‘tit’ is a type of bird, both these totally innocent bird related words can quite easily fall prey to semantics, we don’t think we need to expand on this.  It’s the same with terms like ‘teenage sex’ can certainly be misconstrued as something bad when in reality the search might be for a totally innocent reason like the pitfalls of ‘teenage sex’, statistics on ‘teenage sex’, and so on.    Because the word ’sex’ has been mentioned most filters instantly recognize this as a blacklisted word and the search suffers.
